Following SSU investigation, pair of FSB agents sentenced to life imprisonment for spying in five Ukrainian regions

Based on the evidence collected by the Security Service of Ukraine, two enemy agents exposed in Kramatorsk in August 2024 have been sentenced to life imprisonment with confiscation of property. The convicts are a local couple who, acting on instructions from russia’s federal security service (FSB), provided targeting information for russian strikes in five regions of Ukraine.

The investigation established that the two traitors, posing as a married couple, travelled through Donetsk, Kyiv, Chernihiv, Poltava and Cherkasy regions to identify the locations of Ukrainian Defence Forces and critical energy infrastructure that russia was preparing to target in successive waves of intensive attacks.

The FSB’s tasks were carried out by a Kramatorsk resident who had previously served two prison sentences for theft and robbery.

His accomplice was his partner, a repeat offender who came to the attention of the russian intelligence while seeking ‘easy’ money through Telegram.

The agents identified and passed to the ruscists the locations of Ukrainian air defence positions, reserve command posts and military logistics centres.

They also provided targeting information for russian strikes on key energy facilities supplying electricity to large parts of the regions in which they conducted reconnaissance.

To collect intelligence, the agents rented accommodation offering panoramic views of potential targets. They installed mobile phone cameras on the windows of the rented flats, equipping them with external power supplies and remote access for the FSB. This enabled the russians to monitor the sites remotely.

The SSU detained the agents at their home in Kramatorsk, where they had returned to conduct further reconnaissance missions in the frontline area.

During the searches, investigators seized mobile phones that the agents had used to collect intelligence and coordinate their activities with their handlers.

The agents were also found in possession of funds received from russia. They had attempted to conceal the origin of the money by using it as a deposit towards the purchase of property.

Based on the evidence collected by the SSU, the court found the accused guilty under the Articles of the CCU:

  • 28.2, 111.2 – high treason, committed by a group, by prior conspiracy, under martial law;
  • 209.1 – legalisation (laundering) of property obtained by criminal means.

The investigation was carried out by the SSU Office in Donetsk and Luhansk regions under the procedural supervision of the Donetsk Region Prosecutor’s Office.
