Following SSU’s investigation, general Shaitanov sentenced to 12 years in prison for high treason
Based on the evidence collected by the SSU, the court delivered a guilty verdict against former SSU officer, major general Valeriy Shaitanov. He was found guilty of high treason, attempted terrorist act, and illegal possession of ammunition, and sentenced to 12 years in prison.
Shevchenkivskyi District Court of Kyiv passed the decision today.
Shaitanov was convicted of crimes under Articles 111.1, 15.2, 27.2, 258.2, 263.1 of the CCU.
The case was under consideration from October 2020, after the SSU sent the indictment in this criminal proceeding to the court.
The investigation established that the official, using the callsign ‘Bobyl’, had been in contact with russian FSB colonel Igor Yegorov. The latter, under the callsign ‘Elbrus’, was one of the organizers of the occupation and the terrorist activities in Donbas in the summer of 2014.
It was also ascertained that Shaitanov had collected and passed to the russians information on covert operations in the Anti-Terrorist Operation/Joint Forces Operation area and on the servicemen involved, as well as on SSU operatives and counterintelligence officers, etc.
The SSU Counterintelligence detained Shaitanov in April 2020 as result of a multi-stage special operation.
