Following SSU’s investigation, agent of russian military intelligence sentenced to 12 years in prison
Following an investigation by the SSU, court has convicted an agent of the main directorate of the general staff of russian armed forces (aka the GRU) to imprisonment.
The agent was detained during the SSU’s special operation in Cherkasy region in July last year. He tried to obtain classified information on one of the ammunition depots of Ukrainian troops.
Based on the collected evidence, the court found the accused guilty of treason and sentenced him to 12 years in prison.
The traitor is a resident of Uman, who was recruited by the GRU during his trip to russia in 2018.
The assignment he received from his supervisor was to collect intelligence on the location of ammunition depots in the region and their security regime. He was to use secure electronic channels for communication.
In case the traitor passed relevant information, his handler promised a ‘reward’ of USD 2,000.
Before carrying out the enemy’s instructions, the traitor tried to involve a Ukrainian serviceman, without his knowledge.
However, the SSU Counterintelligence promptly exposed the russian agent on an attempt to obtain classified information.
The SSU Office in Cherkasy region carried out the operation and investigation under the procedural supervision of Cherkasy Region Prosecutor’s Office.
