Following SSU and National Police investigations, FSB agent sentenced to 15 years in prison for committing arsons on russia’s order in western Ukraine

Based on evidence collected by the Security Service and the National Police, an FSB agent who committed acts of sabotage in Volyn and Lviv regions was sentenced to 15 years in prison with confiscation of property.

According to the case file, the perpetrator, acting on russia’s orders, set fire to the front doors of the apartments where Ukrainian servicemen and their families live.

One of his other tasks was to destroy the technological equipment that provides mobile communications.

The SSU Counterintelligence Department detained the suspect in January this year when he attempted to set fire to cellular tower equipment in Lutsk area.

The investigation established that the ordered crimes were carried out by a 39-year-old local repeat offender who had previously served a prison sentence for drug trafficking and, after completing his sentence, began cooperation with the FSB.

According to the investigation, the occupiers remotely recruited a former prisoner through Telegram channels when he was looking for “easy money”.

After receiving instructions from agents, the traitor was tracking the residences of Ukrainian military personnel, then entered their houses and committed arson using a flammable mixture.

After setting fire, the perpetrator recorded it with his phone camera so that he could later “report” to his FSB supervisor.

During the searches, arson tools and a smartphone with evidence of his work for the russian special services were found on the detainee.

Based on the materials collected by the SSU investigators, the court found the agent guilty on several Articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine:

  • Part 2 of Article 111 (high treason committed under martial law);
  • Part 2 of Article 28, Part 2 of Article 113 (sabotage committed by a group of people acting in concert under martial law);
  • Part 2 of Article 28, Part 2 of Article 194 (intentional damage to property committed by arson, by a group of people acting in concert);
  • Part 2 of Article 360 (intentional damage to telecommunications facilities that are part of a telecommunications network, resulting in the termination of telecommunications services, committed in a generally dangerous manner by a group of people acting by prior conspiracy).

The investigation was carried out under the procedural supervision of the Volyn regional prosecutor’s office.
