Following SSU investigation, militant of ‘Somali’ unit, who fought against Ukraine and attempted to flee to EU, sentenced to prison

Based on evidence collected by the Security Service, a militant of russian armed groupings, whom the SSU detained in October 2025 in Volyn, has been sentenced to a prison term.

The investigation established that the perpetrator had travelled to western Ukraine posing as an internally displaced person in order to obtain a Ukrainian passport for travel to the European Union.

The SSU detained him at a hotel in Kovel, from where he was planning to flee. During the search of the detainee’s room, russian and ‘donetsk people’s republic’ passports were found, as well as a military ID and insignia of the russian armed forces.

According to the investigation, the militant turned out to be a resident of Donetsk who, in 2015, joined the russia-controlled armed group ‘Somali’.

As part of this unit, he took part in the fighting for Donetsk Airport, where he was wounded and later ‘discharged’ from the enemy unit.

Subsequently, the traitor, using his status as an internally displaced person, arrived in Volyn. There, he hoped to obtain a Ukrainian passport and travel to the EU exploiting his disability resulting from his injury (one of his limbs had been amputated).

Based on evidence, the court found him guilty under two Articles of the CCU:

  • 111.1 (his treason, committed under martial law);
  • 260.2 (participation in unlawful armed formations).

Given his cooperation with the investigation, the accused was sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment with confiscation of property.

The investigation was carried out by the SSU Office in Volyn region jointly with the State Border Guard Service under the procedural supervision of the regional Prosecutor’s Office.
