Following SSU investigation, former official from Sumy region convicted after fabricating ‘captivity’ story to conceal meeting with FSB handler
An agent of russia’s federal security service has been sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment and confiscation of property based on the evidence collected by the Security Service. The SSU exposed him in November 2023 for guiding enemy strikes at the Sumy region.
The investigation revealed that the former deputy head of the local community, recruited by the ruscists prior to the full-scale invasion, was adjusting enemy fire.
While still in office at the start of the war, the traitor travelled to russia via a russian checkpoint, where he met his FSB handler.
The agent received instructions to identify coordinates of Ukrainian troops’ positions, which the aggressor used to prepare air and artillery strikes.
A few days later, the perpetrator returned to the Sumy region, claiming that he had been ‘held captive’ in russia during his absence.
Next, he resigned from his post and took up a position at a local agricultural enterprise.
Under the guise of work trips, he then reconnoitred the deployment points of the Defence Forces on Ukraine’s north-eastern borders.
The SSU caught the traitor ‘red-handed’ when he tried to pass the geolocations of Ukrainian defence units to the FSB.
A smartphone, which the asset had used to gather intelligence and contact his FSB handler, was seized during the searches. The handler’s identity has been established by the SSU Counterintelligence.
Based on the SSU’s investigation, the court found the accused guilty under Article 111.2 of the CCU (high treason, committed under martial law).
The investigation was carried out by the SSU Office in Sumy region under the procedural supervision of the regional Prosecutor’s Office.
