Following SSU investigation, court convicts GRU mole who posed as chaplain to spy on AFU

Based on evidence collected by the SSU Military Counterintelligence and SSU investigators, another enemy agent who worked for russian military intelligence (‘the GRU’) has been sentenced to 15 years in prison with confiscation of property.

According to the investigation, the perpetrator attempted to ‘join’ the staff of the Airborne Assault Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine under the guise of a chaplain in order to spy on the elite units of the Defence Forces.

The SSU identified the aggressor’s plan at an early stage and detained the mole in Kyiv in March 2024 while he was undergoing an interview for enrolment in the Ukrainian airborne forces.

The investigation established that the occupiers’ task was carried out by a Kyiv resident who was recruited by an employee of the 317th GRU intelligence centre.

Together, they developed a cover story about chaplaincy work, under which the agent attempted to enlist in the Airborne Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

If his infiltration was successful, the traitor was to pass to his handler the geolocations of Ukrainian units’ bases and movements near the front line.

The GRU also hoped to obtain personal data of Ukrainian servicemen from the agent for the preparation of recruitment operations and sabotage.

Before fulfilling the main tasks, the occupiers ‘tested’ their accomplice on adjusting russian air strikes on Kyiv.

Based on the Security Service’s investigation, the court found the accused guilty under Article 111.2 of the CCU (high treason, committed under martial law).

The investigation was carried out under the procedural supervision of the Prosecutor General’s Office.
