Following SSU investigation, russian sleeper agent convicted for spying in Zakarpattia region in first days of war

Based on the evidence collected by the SSU, an enemy agent who spied in Zakarpattia region at the beginning of the full-scale invasion has been sentenced to 13 years in prison. The traitor was detained on 26 February 2022, when he was about to flee to russia through third countries.

The perpetrator is a 43-year-old resident of Khmelnytskyi, who in 2014 came to the attention of the russian military intelligence (‘the GRU’).

At that time, he often travelled to the aggressor state where his mother lives.

Later, it was through her that the asset remotely transmitted to the occupiers the geolocations of strategically important objects in the region, including railway bridges, tunnels, power substations and military units.

For secrecy, he took pictures of the facilities from the train window under the guise of travelling, after he bought all the seats in the compartment.

On the eve of the full-scale invasion, the individual began to prepare his escape to russia and purchased a railway ticket to a third country, from where he planned to get to russia.

Based on the SSU’s investigation, the court found him guilty under three Articles of the CCU:

  • 111.1 (high treason);
  • 14.1, 113 (preparation for sabotage);
  • 263.1 (illegal handling of weapons and ammunition).

In addition to the imprisonment, the convict’s property was confiscated.

The investigation was carried out by the SSU Office in Zakarpattia region under the procedural supervision of the regional Prosecutor’s Office.
