The SSU Counterintelligence is counteracting to the threats of the hybrid war waged by Russia against Ukraine. During 2021, the SSU initiated over 130 criminal proceedings for high treason, espionage and terrorism.

The SSU investigators, under the supervision of the Prosecutor General’s Office, have completed the pre-trial investigation in the criminal proceedings on the leader of an anti-Ukrainian group.

The SSU exposed a large-scale scheme of embezzlement of budget funds in Lviv region. Corrupt officials misappropriated over UAH 6 mln (USD 212,000) allocated for reconstruction of a local landfill.

The SSU has blocked a transnational smuggling channel in Zakarpattia region. The offenders covertly transported goods using their own helicopter, violating the rules of international flights. According to preliminary estimates, their monthly turnover could be as high as UAH 2 mln (USD 70,000).

The SSU continues to expose manifestations of Russia’s hybrid aggression against Ukraine. The Service has identified three more offenders, who ordered bomb alerts in educational institutions, shopping malls and residential buildings in Cherkasy region.

In Transcarpathia, the SSU exposed another scheme of selling fake COVID vaccination certificates. A local doctor, who on social media campaigned for vaccination, in real life made money by faking COVID certificates.
Cyber security
The SSU Cyber Security Department has exposed a multimillion scheme of tax evasion by a Ukrainian company. According to preliminary estimates, the value of its unrecorded operations in the last 18 months is at least UAH 200 million (USD 7 mln).

The Security Service of Ukraine and the American Chamber of Commerce in Ukraine signed a Memorandum of Cooperation and Partnership. Representatives of the Chamber expressed support for Ukraine in its efforts to strengthen the security sector. This was discussed during the meeting of the SSU Head Ivan Bakanov with the delegation of the American Chamber of Commerce in Ukraine headed by its President Andy Hunder.
